It was fun all around last week Thursday night at the farewell party for Father Howard James at the private cottage of SuperClubs Executive vice president, Joey Issa.
Hosted by Issa, National Meats’ boss David Phillips and other members of Father’s Howard’s congregation, the function was to pay tribute to a humble priest who has, in two relatively short years, strengthened the sometimes shaky bond between his parishioners. He has also been credited for increasing the attendance to the Ocho Rios Catholic Church by nearly threefold.
A large crowd turned out for the event.
The lovely Cindy Brakespare and husband Rupert Bent, entertained with a mixture of ballads that went over well with the very appreciative audience.
In attendance were: Tanya Phillips, Bruce and Maggie Lyn, Dr. Francis Barnett, Ravi and Michelle Chatani, Don Creary, Asha Manglani, Peter Bovell, Keisha Roberts, Granville and Leslie Bennett, Paula Thompson, Heather Hudson, Ian Spencer, Natalie Green, Gail Harvey, Joan Whitter, Karen Rhone, Sheryl Robinson and Pierre Battglia.
War of words
Another row seems to brewing between players in the tourism industry with the news of a proposal to lower the cruise shipping head tax charged to passengers arriving in the ports of Montego Bay and Port Antonio. The Ocho Rios interests, feeling that it could means ships leaving their town for the other ports, are not amused and have been making their objections known.
They are maintaining that if there is going to be a reduction of the head tax, it should be done right cross the board and not to appease a select few. A war of words has already began and which I expected to escalate in the coming weeks ahead. One can only hope that good sense will prevail and that what is in the best interest of the country is taken into consideration.
An eye on Boscobel
An interesting thing I happening at Boscobel Beach that bears watching. Currently in receivership and which h resulted in a change in the management structure, the popular family resort is now closed for a supposedly major renovation job, which, at best, is confusing.
The staff is reportedly, though not working, still being paid and there appears to be no fixed time when they will resume work.
It would seem that when a hotel or business is in receivership, it is in the bet interest of the receiver to get it sold as fast as possible?
The Boscobel Beach situation is one to keep an eye on.

National Meats reports J$1.3b of debts
David Phillips is not inclined to say much about his faltering business.
He confirms that it has ceased trading, but insists that National Meats and Food Distributors Limited has not closed down, nor has it been sold.
The distributor of frozen meats, poultry and seafood to the hotel industry has done no business since June, around the time Phillips was engineering a job cut as a cost-saving measure.
“We are not trading, (but) we are not closed,” he said this week.
Phillips, the company’s managing director, said his efforts are concentrated on collecting outstanding receivables.
Indeed, financial data on his company obtained by the Financial Gleaner indicate that he needs all the cash he can get.

Hard times hit National Meats and Foods
NATIONAL Meats and Foods principal, David Phillips was tight-lipped yesterday about what led to his firm shutting its doors to hundreds of workers last week.
But Phillips, in an interview with the Business Observer, acknowledged that the current economic climate had been difficult for his, among other businesses.
Last Friday, the Lydford, St Ann, importer and distributor of meats and foods reportedly issued some 200 permanent, casual, and contract employees redundancy letters and cheques.
This followed weeks of speculation that the company had been crippled by severe cash flow problems and had been hounded by a throng of creditors.

National Meats silent on sudden redundancy exercise
5:57 am, Sun July 11, 2010
National Meats Distributors in Lydford, St. Ann has remained silent on the reasons which led it to conduct a major redundancy exercise.
Nearly 200 permanent, casual, and contract employees were given redundancy letters and cheques on Friday evening after being addressed by the company’s management.
Our news centre on Saturday morning tried to get a comment from National Meat’s boss David Phillips but we were told that he was unavailable to speak on the matter.
It is reported that the company which has operated in Jamaica as the largest distributor of meats for 25 years, will close its doors in a few weeks.

Food safety and authenticity in the processed meat supply chain
The horsemeat incident in January 2013 exposed weaknesses in control in the food supply chain.
“The January 2013 horsemeat incident has revealed a gap between what citizens expect of the controls over the authenticity of their food, and the effectiveness of those controls in reality. The division of responsibilities for food safety and authenticity has created confusion. The Government needs to remove this confusion, and improve its understanding of potential food fraud and how intelligence is brought together and shared.”
Amyas Morse, head of the National Audit Office, 10 October 2013
A report by the National Audit Office has found that, while arrangements for identifying and testing for risks to food safety are relatively mature and effective, similar arrangements for the authenticity of food are not. Government failed to identify the possibility of adulteration of beef products with horsemeat despite indications of heightened risk.

Ebola crisis: why is there bush meat in the UK?
The Ebola virus was probably spread by illegal bush meat – and there’s plenty smuggled into the UK
By Olivia Goldhill9:00AM BST 02 Aug 2014 Comments165 Comments
We don’t know why West Africa is currently suffering from the largest outbreak of Ebola, but humans were almost certainly first infected through contact with “bush meat”.
The virus, which causes internal and external bleeding and is often fatal, is spread through close contact with the sweat, blood and organs of infected animals.

Ethical, organic, safe: the other side of halal food
With concern over animal welfare, supermarkets and restaurants under fire and fears about ‘foreign ways’, halal meat is food’s most politically charged subject. But it’s now a £1bn a year market in the UK alone – and growing fast
Sunday 18 May 2014 06.00 BST Last modified on Tuesday 3 June 2014 10.41 BST
In the Cherwell valley, on a quiet country lane just outside Oxford, lies a pioneer outpost of Britain’s halal food industry. Beside the swells of green where the Cotswolds begin is Willowbrook Farm, where Lutfi and Ruby Radwan and their five children raise animals as the Qur’an and the prophet Muhammad intended. For the Radwans, that means organically and sustainably. Chickens strut under silver birch and wild cherry trees. Sheep and goats chew chemical-free grass, and nose around wildflower meadows. When it is time for slaughter, each animal will – in accordance with Islamic law – have the name of God pronounced over it before dispatch. Invoking Allah before killing an animal is simply “acknowledging a spirituality behind all material existence”, observes Ruby. “It takes you back to humans being stewards of God’s Earth.”

Horsemeat in Tesco burgers prompts apology in UK papers
17 January 2013
From the section UK
Officials said the meat came from two processing plants in the Irish Republic and one in England
Tesco has placed full-page adverts in a number of national UK newspapers apologising for selling beefburgers that were found to contain horsemeat.
The supermarket giant said it and its supplier had let customers down and promised to find out “what happened”.
On Tuesday, it emerged Irish food inspectors had found almost 30% horsemeat in one brand sold by Tesco.
Smaller amounts were also found in beefburgers sold by Iceland, Lidl and Aldi and Dunnes.
Officials said the contaminated products – on sale in the UK and the Irish Republic – posed no risk to human health and had been removed from shop shelves.

Supermarket price war takes toll on UK food suppliers
Increase in number of small and medium-sized food companies in ‘significant’ financial distress
The number of UK food suppliers and farmers struggling to stay afloat has leapt more than 50% in 12 months, as a bitter supermarket price war continues to take its toll.
The industry has never been tougher for Britain’s smallest suppliers, said the study from insolvency specialists Begbies Traynor, after its research found 1,622 growers and suppliers in “significant” financial distress in the three months to the end of June – up from 1,052 at the same time last year.

Horse meat contamination scandal widens to Tesco after spaghetti bolognese test
Romania denied its abattoirs misrepresented horse meat as beef and said its agriculture minister will talk to his U.K. and French counterparts in Brussels this week as the scandal spread throughout Europe.
France will seek sanctions for negligence or fraud and put the meat and fish industries under surveillance to restore confidence. Investigators were at the offices of wholesale food distributor Comigel today, Benoit Hamon, junior minister for consumer affairs said at a press conference in Paris.

New Westminster man takes food from grocery stores and gives it to charities
‘It hurts a lot so I try and grab as much as I can to share it with people,’ says Danison Buan
A New Westminster man is reducing food waste by picking up meat and produce that would be otherwise thrown out —and he is giving it those in need.
Danison Buan drives his car to Save on Foods and Donald’s Market three times a week. He salvages food that is close to its expiration date or is seen as damaged or flawed.

Dr Raymond Chang’s Big Day

Daviot Kelly, Staff Reporter
For such an ‘ordinary guy’, these were no ordinary plaudits.
Jamaican-born Canadian businessman Gladstone Raymond Chang was the toast of his peers on Heroes Day, as Canadian High Commissioner Stephen Hallihan hosted a reception to honour him. Earlier that day, Chang had received the Order of Jamaica at the ceremony of investiture and presentation of national honours and awards at King’s House. Hallihan opined that both countries were proud to have Chang as a son and called him a true patriot to both countries. He labelled him an outstanding philanthropist and a true gentleman, sentiments that would be echoed by the other speakers.

Former foreign minister declines reappointment to Senate
AJ bows out
BY DESMOND ALLEN Executive editor – special assignment allend@jamaicaobserver.com

Arnold Joseph ‘AJ’ Nicholson, the colourful leader of Government Business in the Senate and foreign minister in the former People’s National Party (PNP) Administration, has said farewell after 27 years in representational politics.
Nicholson, a staunch ally of former Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, told his leader a polite but hesitant ‘no’, Jamaica Observer sources said, when she offered to keep him on the Opposition benches in the Senate, where his booming voice and penchant for strident debate were familiar features of Friday afternoons on Duke Street.

Vows shares their journey to the altar…
They First Met…
… at an event in Ocho Rios in the summer of 2007. “The moment I laid eyes on her I just knew it,” David recalled. Rachel felt the same, though it was the last thing on her mind when she showed up at the event. “Instant attraction,” a bubbly Rachel exclaimed. “I just knew it; it had to be love at first sight.” The couple recall staring at each other for a while before actually striking up a conversation and exchanging contact details. Not long after, a strong friendship developed and the inevitable relationship soon followed…
